Went to meet a friend for lunch on Saturday and stopped in at a tiny train store right along my work commute. The retail area can't be more than 15×15' and it has a dual gauge train layout in the center. But I have pulled some treasures out of that shop, and yesterday was a great day... photos to follow.
A massive coal bunker by AHM. I had seen one of these at Christmas at the Connellsville flea market and almost bought it, in spite of its rough shape. In a case of lightning striking twice, for the same price I landed this new-in-box specimen. This must be one of the biggest kits that AHM imported.
The actual bunker was a Union Pacific site as the back photo shows it
The box carries a date from 1988
And oddly enough, it came from Denmark
I am not sure that I ever saw a Danish model
And on a cautionary tale about junk:
One of our neighbors' houses was recently sold, and all the household contents are being sold off like a flea market. It was absolute pandemonium as people sifted through a hoarder's paradise on the day after the official sale days.
A scene from the basement
And one from the upstairs in a 2 car garage
I asked about trains and there were reports that all the Tyco pieces were pulled out on the first day of the bonanza. I did find some small containers of craft paint which did make the cut and followed me home.
-------------------------------------------------------
After uploading those photos I realized I forgot to post last week's fresh catch of old junk! And sadly, Umpdan forgot to post as well after our safari to Cool Trains.
Unless his purchase was a top secret project and I just let the cat out of the bag...
Here's the stuff I can report on:
You never know when these might come in handy... probably not ever! But if you saw them in half they make good structural elements to keep building sides from warping in.
This lot was too cool to pass over- bits and pieces and cars pretty well complete to make 6 or 7 of these nifty hot metal cars.
Two cars show evidence of some unnecessary bandsaw tomfoolery. There is a double car and one with a ladder crossover in the middle of the car so that the "bucket does not fit in there.
There are plastic ones made by Walthers and some metal from an unknown manufacturer. These two are filled with orange clay to look like molten metal.
The prototypes are written about and modeled here: modelingthesp.blogspot.com/2021/10/a-pollock-hot-metal-car-part-2.html
Proof that my most recent Auto-Train car is rail worthy. I just need to mix up some purple for the trucks, and add a black wash on the louvers, and renumber it...
And finally, the last few DPM panels as a junk lot from 2020 have been put together as a backdrop building
