So we've all seen the Tyco Machine shop (also known as Standard Electric). If you have the Gruesome Casket factory like I did this building was a add on to make the kit bigger. Most every large club layout I've visited in the area always as one or two of these hiding in the background. Sometimes they are lightly kitbashed and a little harder to pick out.
I don't have any clue what my taste are in buildings I've never done any before. I just know I need a few to fill some holes as I build my town lol. Some of those holes aren't perfectly square or rectangular. I live near Pittsburgh where if you drive through some old parts of the city you'll find lots of buildings whose shapes were dictated years ago by the railroads having spurs all over the place to provide service to customers. So with that inspiration I went ahead and chopped the building accordingly. My plan to help me along was to name all the businesses after stuff I has seen locally or businesses owned by friends & family. This was based off a lawn mower business owned by a good friend of mine into trains. I have no mowers to go with the building yet that will happen eventually haha. Mind you this looks nothing like his actual building one bit I just stole the name.
I should mention I bought this kit used (Gruesome Casket factory) at a trains how a few years back. The people selling it were selling it for a deceased modeler friend of theirs. He did some good painting on the main building so that one will go up as is with just some minor tweaks. He didn't finish the machine shop side so it was a good candidate to work over. The main building will come at a later date soon as I get around too it haha.
First need to cut the walls up then glue them back together. This was a pretty harrowing thing since some of the walls were taller than others I had to pay mind to keep various bits together so they looked right. On top of getting the angle out of the building I wanted.
DONE! And looks half plausible too not to shabby. Added a garage opening on the side and lined it with brick styrene to set it off a little. Did a custom roof using some heavy gauge cardboard. Then covered with tar paper (painted masking tape) and used a paint pen to make the tar lines and weathered lightly with chalk. The flashing on the edges is just styrene I painted.
Time to paint the main building. I really wanted to take it in a little different direction. We have lots of yellow brick buildings in the area and I rarely see them on layouts so I decided to give it a shot.
Did a lot of the detail work off to the side before slapping the windows on it and bringing the whole thing together! First two shots are of the building where its roughly going to live. You can see why I made it this shape now.
Some shots of it out in the open. Sign up top is just balsa wood. All the print & logos I just made on my printer and hit them with some chalk to tone them down a little. Whole building was ink washed, dry brushed, and chalked to give it some character. Almost over did it I had go back and actually clean up some areas. Front windows have shades in them just for fun. Garage side has a false floor for photo purposes. Bricked off one of the windows in the rear corner since that's where the heater is attached to the building I figured that made sense to do there. Then added a vent on the roof from some scrap I had. All in all in came out pretty well for my first building kitbash!
