I bought this Bachmann Spectrum engine at the last Kutztown train show. I was told that it runs slow but for $10 I was willing to take a chance. When I got home it definitely ran slow and noisy. When I opened it up the amount of crud, grease and oil on the gears and axles was horrible. No wonder it ran slow I thought. After cleaning everything including the wheels and putting some CA on 4 of the 6 gears that were cracked, I put it back together and put it back on the track. It runs very smoothly but still kinda slow and still has that noisy growl. It has a tremendous amount of pulling power and doesn't run any slower with or without pulling a number of cars. I did notice some plastic around the motor had what appeared to be overheating, where the plastic was a little warped. Because of the thick and cruddy gears, could this have caused the motor to overheat and cause it to be really loud? I don't detect a burnt smell but I'm thinking that the rotor is rubbing on the windings, causing the noise. Could that be the reason?

crosswire: What's a snow flurry? Do not have that expression down here.

umpdan31: A snow flurry is a quick burst of light snow that may last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours with very little, if any, accumulation. But then, you already knew that and were just bragging that you don't get any snow where you are.

umpdan31: By the way, crossfire, where is "down here"? I might want to move there. I hate snow!

JNXT 7707: I believe crossfire is in the Houston, TX area - south of ****'s Front Porch. Very, very slight chance of flurries

newbieho: I believe JNXT 7707 is correct. crosswire did mention some place call East Houston in one of his posts. We get a couple of flurries here once in a while, too...like 36" in 3 days. UGH! Can't wait for that again...the shoveling, etc.

crosswire: Ah, flurries explained. The closest thing to snow flurries that we have are leaf flurries. One good cold front (40s) in November or December and all the trees give up their leaves in one big mess; no warning, no color change, just gone. Yeah, just bragging

crosswire: I think I will take the boat around to a restaurant for lunch with the guys. Cheers from Laporte, Texas, east of Houston.

JNXT 7707: We're getting Ohio weather from around early October it looks like. 60s-70s, clear blue skies, a nice breeze. A nice time of year to visit Texas.
