The wife and I are running some errands that 'happened' to take me by the Train Store in town. I said I hadn't been there in awhile and I wanted to stop in and see if there was anything new. A quick stop. In and out. Won't take more than a few minutes. I not buying anything... yeah, you've all been there. I have been cutting back on the train expenditures to make my spouse happy. I figure I'm not buying anything with her here so it's all good.
I walk down the aisle and there are 5 gorgeous boxes on the back shelf, black with gold foil lettering and they know my name for they are calling it loudly! Spectrum Master series cars, I don't know you yet but let me introduce my self to you. Inside these wondrous boxes are 5 B&O passenger cars cradled carefully in a foam womb. How can I resist? They are in almost perfect shape with only a little dust to illustrate the years spent bringing joy to some lucky admirer. If this was a barn find, they would call it a patina! I want these. I pull one out and see that they are meticulously made by some fastidious China man who poured his heart and soul into this great creation. Clearly he wanted to leave a monument to his life's struggle and these cars are it! metal wheels, interiors that are hand painted and lit. ARTICULATING COUPLERS!
In my head, I'm playing out the many scenarios in which I can distract my wife while I can run to the cash register and purchase these fine cars. I'm reaching into my pocket, fingering the key fob to sound the car alarm when she looks over my shoulder and sees the car I'm holding. She asks, 'Is that a B&O car?'
Why, yes dear, it is a b&O car. Why do you ask?
She answers, 'My favorite Uncle worked his whole life for the B&O. They make me think of him. Would it be OK if we bought them?' I hear Angels singing. A light from heaven splits the clouds and shines directly on the Train Store.
Bugles blow from above as I hesitate a moment, pondering my situation and reply, 'well, I guess we can if it makes you happy!'
And that, gentlemen, is what good living and a great wife can get you!
Now, with the preamble done, let's get to the nitty gritty. I'm putting kadee's on the cars and getting them ship shape. Replacing the single light bulb with LED's. But the coupler hangs down a little too low. Has anyone ever worked on one of these cars and raised it up? Is there a trick to getting the trucks off? I really don't want to break anything by forcing it. Thanks for any help!
