I own a early pancake GS4 by Bachmann. It's a Chessie so I do wanna save it. Was wondering if anyone has ever swapped those old shells onto the latest mechanism? I doubt it'll be a direct fit.
I believe all the second generation can motored 4-8-4 Bachmanns use the same drive chassis. You will need to save the cylinders and valve gear from the old engine. I have swapped a train set can motored Union Pacific 4-8-4 (Niagara) chassis to re-power a Santa Fe pancake Northern. The swap was a easy job as all mounting holes aligned. Be Sure if you buy a used engine that all the drive wheels align as they also have plastic centers prone to break. There is now a third generation of Northers from Bachmann, I have no experience with these engines.

umpdan31: JadeFog: i found a brand new in the box ConCor PRR mail car. Although the ones that I already have are all heavyweights with 6 wheel trucks, this one is a lightweight with 4 wheel trucks. I also picked up a few assorted couplers. Glad he was open again.

umpdan31: The mail car was 10 bucks. Not bad for a brand new car.
