I expect that we have all heard of TCR?, (the legendary slotless race system originallly made by 'Ideal' before coming under the TYCO umbrella)..
I have some Ideal slot cars (from Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazard and The Professionals sets) and purely by chance I noticed that these had motors that looked exactly like those in US-1. Same was true of the Spare TCR Jam Car Motors that turn up from time to time on e-bay. TCR Part 3261-5.
I bought one as a trial and fitted it - The orange worm as supplied fitted to the TCR motor is wrong for US-1, but is easily removed. The replacement US-1 worm needs to be salvaged from your damaged/worn/burnt out US-1 Motor- It also slides off and slides on easily.
The TCR motor has a shaft that is roughly 1/4" shorter that the original US-1 type, but this will not effect the performance. The TCR motor clips in to US-1 chassis, just the same as an original, but you need to make sure it goes in the right way, there is a slight hollow on the white nylon rear block, where the brushes are, and that should be towards the bottom......
Oil it up and off it goes.
The other day I bought a beautiful looking US-1 GI Joe Troop Carrier. I bought it to paint, but quickly realised it was better than my existing one, so that will get sprayed instead. Anyway, I oiled up the chassis and tried it and was vitually deafend by the noise! Nothing I did could stop it, or make it better. Never come accross a US-1 chassi like this! Silicone grease and oiling made no difference. I left it running to see if it improved and could hear it ownstairs. All my other US-1 chassis are silky smooth an relatively silent.
In the end I gave up, so a brand new TCR Jam Car motor was opened, worm exchanged, oiled and fitted - result - silky bliss!
So, if you own and run Tyco US-1 and ever come accross a new TCR Jam Car motor - go for it. It is a useful spare part!
Incidentally, don't forget that despite a few cosmetic differences, all US-1 chassis are mechanically the same inside, even the fire engine, wrecker and the Stomper. Even the weird and so far unexplained chassis with the rivetted on pick ups have the same motor!
