There is no denying that those LIRR ten wheelers where beautiful engines. I read something awhile back (I can't remember where) that after the MTA take over of the LIRR that they could not turn a profit on the freight end of the business. That is why they sold it off. Now since the freight business on the island is handled by the New York & Atlantic Railway they are turning a profit, and have been steadily expanding their operation. The article that I read may have been from Nick Kalus. If you are not familiar with Nick he is an authority on past LIRR operations. He had a beautiful switching layout in RMC years ago.
