In this THREAD I mentioned I have one of those AHM Center Cab Switchers. I ordered the worm wheels from the E-Bay as NickelPlate had suggested. I received them today and began the project right away to see how fast it would run after the conversion.
I'm going to present this as a step by step (SBS) of how I did it. I also plan on upgrading the appearance of the engine.
So here's what it looks like with out any mods at all.
The "pieces - parts".
Kind of hard to see do to the black plastic, but it's just the motor and chassis. Remove the one screw in front of the worm gear and the chassis separates from the handrails and walkway.
I pressed the brass worm gear off the shaft using my Grizzly mini-mill. I pushed down until the shaft was even with the end of the worm gear.
Then I used a drill smaller than the diameter of the shaft the brass gear was mounted on, reversed in the drill chuck and pushed the shaft the rest of the way out.
I was able to pull the plastic worm gear off by hand. Save the shaft the brass worm gear was on. You never know. You might need it someday.
Next I pressed the worm gear on to the motor shaft. It seems the brass gear will go on one about half it's length by hand. The rest of the way I used the mill again with the drill still in the chuck to press the gear on fully. Don't push to hard or you'll push the gear beyond the end of the motor shaft.
And then I screwed up. Replacing the motor clip in the back I accidently slipped and broke it. Have to figure out a way to make an easy fix.
So this is were the project stands for now. I'll continue once I figure out something easy incase this happens to somebody else.
