I have a Model Power F2A with eight wheel drive much like Athearns set up. This engine shorts out as soon as it is placed on the track. I have taken the wheels off to check for insulators and found that they have plastic axles. I have checked all wires for worn insulation and good soldier joints, all is good.
I have noticed that the motor will try to turn when power is at full, but very very little and if I try to turn the motor by hand it kind of acts like a DC motor that is connected to AC power, it wants to turn both ways.
I know it's not much to go on, but any ideas would be great.
This unit has wheels with plastic axles, The metal wheels feed the power to the motor by way of wipers mounted on the truck behind the wheels. So I don't think this would be the problem unless I missed something.
If you're worried about getting it back together; I have found most cans have little holes that allow you to insert toothpicks into that will hold the brushes out of the way while you slide the end back on. Then you pull the toothpicks out and the brushes releases back in to the little track that keeps them centered on the commutator.
While you have it apart, take your voltmeter set to "OHMS" (the upside down horseshoe) and on the 200 or such scale. I have found anyplace from 6 ohms to 14 ohms on different motors. The big thing is that the resistance should be pretty much the same from segment to segment.
If you find something way out of whack, you may have open or shorted windings. Or there could be a problem with the solder job where the windings connect to the commutator.

I did get it apart and found the motor to be like new looking inside. From what I could see there are no broken or loose wires, the brushes are clean and the commutator is clean as well. I cleaned them anyway.
It still has very weak power but no light show this time.
I will check OHMs tomorrow, Thanks for the tip.
My workbench shop light died, so that was my excuse to get an LED shop light today and a few more tools for the workbench, so I am hoping to get more trains back on the rails.

Make sure there are no other shorts on the chassis. Not sure exactly where to look, but if you have continuity function on your multimeter, set it to that and check between the wheels and wires and anything else metal to see if you get a beep (continuous circuit found).
