I like to upgrade all my rolling stock to Kadee trucks and couplers. Or at least Kadee wheel sets and couplers (Rivarossi passenger cars only get Kadee couplers). The Tyco 3 dome tank cars are no exception but do take a little more work than other cars.
Here's some pics of how I: fill in the bogie bolster hole, drill and tap for a #2-56 screw and then prep the trucks by cutting off the coupler pocket, reaming the bearing journals and installing Kadee wheel sets and drilling new bogie pivot holes. The existing holes are too large.
I install .88 wheels on the outside of each truck and .110 wheels on the inside. I like using .88 wheels on my freight cars for a more prototypical look but continue to use the .110 on the inside of 3 axle trucks so that I save a little money with not having to order so many .88 wheel sets and since I'm pulling .110 wheel sets out of other trucks. In the last pic you will see that I have 3 of the Micro Mark Truck Tuners: one that is stock, one with the little rubber gripper pushed to one side so that I can ream the center bearing journals and my original one, which is getting dull, attached to a handle. I also use Micro Marks Truck Spreaders.
In my next post I will show you how I fabricate End Platforms that the coulper gear boxes and other details such as hand brakes, air reservoir, etc. will be mounted to.

Very interesting. When you complete your post, please have a side by side before and after photo, to see all the enhancements. Ever since I was a kid, I loved these big tankers, and to see upgrades like you're doing is very interesting.

wow! Brilliant!! love the home made truck tuner!!!! heat shrink, a truck tuner, and part of a tooth brush?
i havent seen those pliers before. what are they used for?
Almost correct on the truck tuner handle. It's from one of those in-between-tooth mini-brushes. The pliers are Truck Frame Spreaders by Micro Mark to ease the process of inserting and removing wheel/axles or Truck Tuners from the bogie frame.
Yesterday I received the AB brake system details from Shape Ways. 16 highly detailed, accurate to scale, sets (air tank, brake cylinder with linkage/bracket, second linkage/bracket) for $50. That works out to $3.125 per set. I plan on using 2 AB sets per tank car. One at each end.
rbturner: Many years ago I built a Budweiser Clydesdale, 8 horse hit w/ wagon. It sat on a cobblestone base. I painted each cobblestone individually with various earth tone colors. It looked great but was a real job.

frankenstein: Why get stalled? Things like that have a great variation to them, and are largely interpretive.

ZeldaTheSwordsman: Because I needed to be sure the cobblestones weren't completely off the wall before proceeding to the weathering stage of painting the base. I know there's a lot of variation, but I was worried I had still managed to goof it up

methuener: My B&O Pratt Street layout will be all street running and all cobblestones. I'm going with paper sheets with cobblestones printed from photo images.

eilif: Is there a topic where we share our collection of rolling stock from other member's freelanced railroads? I've got a BC&E on the way that will join equipment from JNXT, NMN, and JFI, it'd be nice to have a specific place to share this stuff.

JNXT 7707: I don't think there is one, or a specific place for that - but just create one under "Gone to Beans Coffee Shop" I'd say. Sounds like it could be fun!

JNXT 7707: I've also acquired a small handful of mystery freelance roads from train shows, done with such care that I can't think of stripping them.

John: JNXT, Don't want the cars but would like to see the pictures. Please!

John: I guess I will never understand the romantic nostalgia that is felt about Woodstock. I grew up in that era. Woodstock seemed more like a Drunken Roman Orgy than a music festival. I guess I was a Red Neck then too.

JNXT 7707: I second that. I do like some of the music but the event itself was a disaster. It has improved over the years though, like a fine hippie wine

mph: Nothing that I can find. I may have to try something drastic and build a mote filled with Fogite - that will stop anything, right?
