Got involved in a money-making project installing a Tsunami sound decoder into a Genesis Mikado some months ago. Just got around to completing it, tested it last weekend, and after a few minutes, it started being intermittent, then it quit. GREAT. I paid $150 for the decoder, haven't got paid for the job, yeesh. Took it to the train shop today to troubleshoot it at lunch, with a regular decoder I knew was good - still dead. Hmm. Took it back to my office, then worked on it after closing time. Got to looking at it, the black wire had somehow come loose from the frame. Hadn't noticed that last week, must have finally broken totally free. Took me a bit to figure out how to get the body shell lifted , I found out I could get to the frame screw holding the wire connection without a total disassembly. Removed the screw and mini connector, resoldered the wire to it, had minimum to begin with apparently, hooked it back up, and will retest it Sunday when I go in to the shop again to work all day. HOPEFULLY that fixed it! Whew! Wasn't looking forward to having to return the decoder for repair/replacement. Need that $150 back plus my labor charge! Sucks being broke. At any rate, I noticed that Tsunami, unlike Digtrax, requires you to set a CV value to get the engine to run on straight DC volts. Kinda sucks on that. Wonder why they did that? Anyway, hope to have it finished this weekend and I can call the guy to complete the project. Also found that Athearn had put on a wheel backwards on a tender axle, the flange was on the OUTSIDE. Huh. I was able to turn it around today as well, didn't require special tools luckily. Hopefully nothing ELSE will go wrong. I need to get this engine back to him.
