I believe some clarification is needed here. Is this thread considering just personal layouts? What about belonging to a modular club where the individual owns and maintains the modules they build. Some own ten or more modules. There are many of those up here. The extreme would be, in my opinion, the large FREEMO layouts built in The Northwest U.S. and Southwest Canada. These are not permanent layouts and are large enough to run MEGA-trains.

Those FREEMO and/or NTRAK collaborations are the best. Our local Greenberg always has several and it is fun to watch the long freights drone by. So I would certainly count aggregates like that a layout. I nver understood the excitement of the "TimeSaver" train puzzle, but that certainly is a layout too.
I guess my definition of layout would have to include operable trains.

Simply put, a layout is a place to run your trains. As long as you're having fun with it that's all that matters.
That said, we all have different ideas about what WE want in a layout. What i want is probably different than many others, and what they want is different than my taste. As an example, i point to the BC&E. I personally find this layout fascinating. Frankie has broken almost every one of my standards for layout design and operation, yet his layout is FUN. This comes across in the stories and photos he's posted. And to me that makes it a much better layout than most i've seen in the magazines.

I appreciate that, j. There is quite an involved backstory to the BC&E, which has a lot to do with how it's built and operated. Truth is, it goes against a lot of my own standards, but when we are running it and having fun none of that seems to matter. Thanks.

umpdan31: JadeFog: i found a brand new in the box ConCor PRR mail car. Although the ones that I already have are all heavyweights with 6 wheel trucks, this one is a lightweight with 4 wheel trucks. I also picked up a few assorted couplers. Glad he was open again.

umpdan31: The mail car was 10 bucks. Not bad for a brand new car.
