No worries frankenstein. I understand the "life", seems like I always have 9 irons in the fire. Through my reading on this forum I have seen how the brush springs from this particular slot car will work, the brushes from that particular slot car will work, and the magnets from this particular slot car will work. It amazes me what all has been figured out with the old TYCO trains. I may be wrong but to me it looks like the springs, brushes, and armature would all interchange. Its the cover that has different designs. Just made me curious if the armature covers were swappable from one PT to the next.
Although not a power torque fan myself, I have worked on them. It seems as though Tyco found out that these motors tended to overheat rather quickly and subsequently added vent holes to the covers. I believe the covers from all years will fit. It's just a matter of if you want the PT to overheat quickly or somewhat less quickly. It is going to overheat rapidly regardless if it has vent holes or not.
I have also read threads on here where installing better magnets will help these PT's immensely. Perhaps the PT masters here can lead you to that particular discussion.
I think another point is to keep these PT's oiled and free of dust/lint/dirt. Perhaps every now and then place it on it's side or in a cradle and let it run at full power for a few minutes in each direction. Sort of like what I did to my El Camino's 350 ci, 4-Bolt main, small block Chevy. Every now and then it needed to have the carbon blown off the valves and plugs. Of course I did that even if it didn't need it but that is another story. 😇
I read the power torque performance thread by TK Dave. He mentioned the best bang for you buck is the Dash Motorsports magnets for Aurora Thunderjet slot cars. Have not had much luck finding any of them. I did fine one listing on ebay for them, but the was kind of sketchy on his Gauss readings. I did find these: Clicky. There are 3 different versions on this listing, black, red and blue. Wondering if anyone has tried them out?
I do have them. So, do you need just the cover or a running assembly? As far as parts go, Life Like and Bachmann pancake springs and brushes will work fine if you can't find spare Tyco parts.
BTW, here's what happens when hanging out with this crowd. I mentioned wheels, and I get BAGS FULL of them (this is only one bag), several PT motors arrived as surprises, and I asked for a flatcar once....
