Just signed up this evening, guys. Here's my story...
Over the last couple of years, I've been thinking that I need a new hobby. I just recently got rid of the last remnants from my last one...Mustangs. Through watching some YouTube videos, I had started rekindling my love of model trains from my childhood, and now that the kids are gone (married off my youngest son last September), I have a recently vacated room in the house that's just begging to be used.
SOOO.....fast-forward to last Christmas; the wife and I were at my Mom's for the family thing, and my Mom shows me a box she pulled from the attic right before Thanksgiving. Any guesses to what was inside??? EXACTLY.......my HO train stuff from childhood...all TYCO except for a few scenery pieces and freight cars.
Well, that did it!!! Now that box is in MY attic. OF COURSE, I just HAD to go through it before putting it away, and I realized I had forgotten how much allowance and gift money I spent on this stuff. There's about 100+ pieces of track, 23 various freight cars, 4 Amtrak cars, 4 cabooses, 4 transformers, 2 #638 2-8-0 Chattanoogas , a #5628 Chattanooga GP-20(??), a BN shark, and an Amtrak shark. I even found one of the Chattanooga "whistle" billboards that was included in the set. I haven't tested anything yet, but best I remember, only the GP-20 and one of the sharks still run. The others need something done about what I used to call the "TYCO Spin".....the motor turns, but the little metal gear that was pressed on the the armature shaft (pinion gear??) just sits there, so no movement. I'm sure y'all know about that.
Anyway, those are projects for after I get the room cleared out, and my benchwork going. I might be able to get there by summer, but obviously work and honey-do's come first. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to reading up and catching up on 35+ years of what I missed, and I'll be picking y'alls brains every chance I get...BE WARNED!!!
P.S. In case you're wondering, my forum name stands for Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio R.R. It was the very first railroad to hit my hometown of San Antonio, TX in 1877. I think that's the line I'll be modeling on my new layout.
