Precious metal brushes add almost no drag, so they are good for servo mechanisms where quick, precise response is needed. Such applications involve low current draw and/or short duty cycles, so they last. They're also cheaper.
I may have helped to cause the brush failure by over-oiling, but this motor -- ironically enough -- had an intermittent bearing squeal (like PT's were prone to) that I couldn't cure no matter what I used. You wouldn't think oil would be a problem for a wiper type brush, but if it caused arcing that could have helped them burn through.
I know a guy on another group who repowers brass professionally with motors that have them, and he claims he hasn't had a failure. Maybe, but they still aren't as sturdy as carbon brushes. I had a VCR loading motor whose PM brushes gave out shortly after I salvaged it, and I was just in the testing phase. They were worn through from years of use.
It's probably a good thing that I have to work, otherwise I'd be wasting away, glued to my workbench stool, investigating, tinkering, trolleying and train-ing on stuff like this.
rdc, I have been there. First six months of retirement down here in Texas followed that script. Finally had to force myself out the door into a walking program last week, before they just started sliding food under the workshop door and running away.

umpdan31: JadeFog: i found a brand new in the box ConCor PRR mail car. Although the ones that I already have are all heavyweights with 6 wheel trucks, this one is a lightweight with 4 wheel trucks. I also picked up a few assorted couplers. Glad he was open again.

umpdan31: The mail car was 10 bucks. Not bad for a brand new car.
