I managed to pick up 2 Kato RS-2's on ebay. I have no experience with these as these are my first. I have always heard that they are very good and these seem to be just that. After having worked on the older Athearn, these seem like finely tuned performance engines. They are heavy and solid, no twist or movement in the shell. And even though these two are filthy, they still run great. they run really quiet and run well at low speed and high. After the Athearn growl, it's amazing how quiet they are. They are DCC ready.
I managed to get the shell off, but I don't want to break anything while giving it a once over. It looks pretty standard, just much better built. Any body have experience with these and have some hints? The gear covers are on tight and I afraid I will break something if I just pry it off. Has anyone converted one to DCC? They are DCC ready, but there isn't room for a board unless I take out one of the weights.
Good to know. Is the 126 able to reliably handle an old Jet motor then or is a roll of the dice? I don't have many of those motors and DCC'ing would be quite a way off, but it'd be good to know you're not always on the bleeding edge of burning out your decoder.

These Katos are beauties. I have one in D&H, but it's an older run without the DCC ready board. I had to open it to replace the headlight bulb. Beautifully designed and executed, but you do have to be mindful of all of those tabs.
