I used those steel Bic flint springs in the late 70's when I tried repowering my Rivarossi Southern Crescent Pacific with a large motor in the tender. I inserted lengths of 2mm shaft inside the springs that prevented them from twisting into loops, but still allowed them to pivot. I had already tried making a new motor mount from a thick steel weight, so I soldered a hat bearing into that to support the shaft going to the gearbox. It would have worked if the springs hadn't fatigued and broken at the points where they flexed.
The can motor was so powerful that the tender would tip if you gunned it.
I still have that Pacific, but now it sports a quiet Mabuchi can.
Now there's a video I would watch. Punching a loco and watching the tender twist.
Nelson, the inventor of; Tender Torque.
LOL. It really was a power torque. The motor was the 12 volt hobby motor Radio Shack sold for years, and it took up a lot of room in the tender (I still have it in a parts box, come to think of it). It has lots of torque, but was far too speedy for the Pacific. It's a miracle the side rods didn't fly off.
I made a mounting bracket for it from a thin AHM car weight that I bent into an L, using a vise as a bending brake, then I drilled holes in it for the bearing and mounting screws. I only had to drill a small hole in the front of the tender for the spring shaft, which I puttied up when I removed it.

umpdan31: JadeFog: i found a brand new in the box ConCor PRR mail car. Although the ones that I already have are all heavyweights with 6 wheel trucks, this one is a lightweight with 4 wheel trucks. I also picked up a few assorted couplers. Glad he was open again.

umpdan31: The mail car was 10 bucks. Not bad for a brand new car.
